The French got their revenge at Tokyo 2020, this time beating Denmark by two goals (25-23) to become the first country to win three Olympic gold medals in men's handball.
At the 2021 World Cup in Egypt, the French went undefeated in the group stage. After an overtime win over Hungary in the quarter-finals, they lost to Sweden 32-26 in the semi-finals and to Spain in the third-place playoff (35-29). It was the fourth time in 15 tournaments that they failed to finish in the top three. However, they have won six world titles in that time, most recently in 2017.
France are three-time European champions (2006, 2010, 2014). In 2020, they were eliminated in the group stage by Portugal and Norway, resulting in their lowest final ranking in the tournament.
