The last time the team won this trophy was in 1969, and club legend Alan Shearer said that winning it this year would be more important than qualifying for the Champions League.

The Magpies have a series of eight consecutive defeats at Wembley, since their last success in the FA Cup final in 1955. The North East of England does not get trophies often, the last one being won by Middlesbrough in 2004. Newcastle are currently performing well in the Premier League, where they sit in fifth place with ten victories and 41 points after a draw against Bournemouth in their last match.

Willock, Pope, Krafth, and Dubravka, who is not eligible to play in this tournament, will miss the final.
