At the Tokyo Olympics, Australia national women's football team started with a victory over their neighbors from New Zealand (2:1). The victory at the start was a good motivation for the whole tournament. In the second game, Tony Gustavsson's charges lost to Sweden (2:4), and in the third round, the Matildas drew their today's opponents.

In the quarterfinals, the Australians defeated a very strong team from Great Britain (4:3 OT). In the semifinals, they once again faced Sweden, and again were defeated. The Yellow-Greens had an overall game advantage but conceded the decisive goal in the 46th minute.

The USA have been inconsistent at the Olympics. The four-time Olympic champion and medalist of all world cups disappointed their fans already in the first round - they suffered a crushing defeat from Sweden with a score of 0:3. The only confident victory was earned in the second round over New Zealand (6:1), but after that, the US team drew Australia. 

A very exciting quarterfinal game against the Netherlands ended with a penalty shootout, in which the Stars and Stripes were luckier. However, their luck was out in the semifinal: the Canadians scored a penalty in the 74th minute and advanced to the final.
