The USA made it to the playoffs, although after the crushing defeat from Sweden in the first round (0:3), some doubted that they would be able to do so. But the medalists of all the World Cups and the four-time Olympic champions won a confident victory over New Zealand in the second round (6:1), and then drew Australia. A goalless draw in the third round was yet another disappointment, however, that was enough to qualify from second place.

A serious test awaited the American women in the quarterfinals. Martens missed a penalty on the 81st minute. After a draw in full time (2:2), the USA won the penalty shootout (3:2) and knocked the Dutch team out of the tournament. 

At the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Canada won their second set of bronze medals. They are close to repeating this success in Tokyo. In the first round of the tournament, the Canadians drew Japan (1: 1), after that, they snatched a victory in the game against Chile (2:1). The most difficult match Canada had against Great Britain, but the North Americans drew the British (1: 1), which was enough to get to the playoffs.

In the quarterfinals, the Canadian women held out against Brazil in full time and earned their ticket to the semifinal in the penalty shootout (4:3).
