Tampa quickly corrected the poor start to the regular season and posted a four-game winning streak. Moreover, John Cooper's team coped with quite serious rivals. First, they beat Washington (3:1) and Philadelphia (4:1), then defeated Minnesota (3:2), and then dealt with the Islanders (5:3). The last meeting was especially successful for Brandon Hagel, who scored a hat-trick and scored an assist.
But the trip to New York turned out to be completely different. The Rangers took the lead in the second minute, and by the first break, the home team's advantage had grown to two goals thanks to a double by Alexis Lafreniere. The Lightning were able to respond only with a goal from Zemgus Girgensons and lost 1-4. Andrei Vasilevsky deflected 19 shots, but the field players failed to create the usual pressure on someone else's goal. However, before this setback, the team demonstrated its capabilities quite convincingly.
Seattle Kraken
Seattle's away series is shaping up even better than one might have expected. First, the Kraken defeated Detroit 6-3, then defeated Washington 5-3. In both cases, the guests actively used fast attacks, and the opponents did not always have time to rebuild after losing the puck. Lane Lambert's team scored 11 times in two meetings.
However, then another problem appeared. Against Philadelphia, Seattle led 2-0 after two periods thanks to goals from Bobby McMahon and Will Ottavainen, but completely lost the advantage in the final stretch. As a result, it came to the shootout, where McMahon made the decisive throw (3:2). Moreover, similar difficulties arose in Washington, where the guests also allowed the opponent to return to the game. Keeping the Kraken advantage is still noticeably more difficult than creating it.
Seattle is clearly able to create chances on the road, but previous meetings have revealed an important weakness of the team. When the opponent adds up in the final period, the Kraken start spending too much time in their zone and gradually lose control of the game. Such mistakes can be much more expensive against Tampa. The hosts have a fairly powerful offense, where Hagel, Gunzel and Kucherov are able to use even small free zones.
The loss to the Rangers does not negate the four previous victories in which Cooper's team looked convincing enough. Moreover, on home ice, Lightning can immediately offer their opponent serious pressure and force him to defend more. The guests will certainly find opportunities for quick counterattacks, but it will not be easy to maintain such a pace throughout the meeting. There is more reason to count on the success of the owners.
