Few people could have expected such a weak performance from the USA in the group stage of the World Cup. Although the team did not assemble the strongest line-up, even under all circumstances it looked many times stronger than the obvious outsiders of the group. In the match with Switzerland, the clear favorite, the national team was unable to cope with the opponent's powerful pressure and conceded nine unanswered goals (0:9).

Nevertheless, the Hungarians scored one very important victory over the main outsider, Great Britain, and dry with a score of 5:0. Striker Terboch scored a double. It was this victory that practically guaranteed Hungary a place in the elite division.
