Montevideo City managed to qualify for the main stage of the tournament, beating another Uruguayan club, Defensor Sporting (1-0). At the same time, the capital's club is not impressive in the local championship yet. After ten matches, the team is only in sixth place with 15 points. Like today's opponent, the Porto Alegre club has scored only one point in the last three rounds. On the road, Luis Castro's team lost to Vasco da Gama (1:2) and Palmeiras (1:2), and at home the club could not beat the modest Remo (0:0) from the relegation zone, although the opponent finished the match in the minority.
