Now hardly anyone will remember that at the end of January, a crisis broke out in the team's game, which resulted in the worst period in the history of its participation in the Kontinental Hockey League – a series of seven defeats in a row, including four on its own court, which led to the loss of several places in the standings. To the credit of the Army team, they managed to turn the situation around and return to the fight for places in the playoffs. Starting on February 3, the Red-Blues scored 11 wins and 23 points in 14 matches, which allowed them to qualify ahead of schedule for the cup round games. The appetite comes with eating, and now the team has quite tangible chances to climb into the top four in the West, for which it will have to win the competition from CSKA, Torpedo and Dynamo Moscow.

The army team is approaching the game with Severstal with an active series of four victories on the next wave of the game's rise. In March, they successively overcame the resistance of Barys (7:0), Dynamo Moscow (2:1, OT) and Dinamo Minsk twice (2:1, OT and 4:3). The home game against Minsk turned out to be especially intense on March 11. The hosts firmly seized the initiative at the beginning of the match and led 4-0 by the middle of the second period. Dynamo made a desperate attempt to return to the game, for which they twice used an unconventional technique: during their majority, they released the sixth fielder instead of the goalkeeper and thus scored two goals in a row. Six minutes before the end of the third period, the score became 4:3. Nevertheless, SKA managed to hold off the final onslaught of the Minsk team, celebrated the victory in regular time and, following the results of the season series with Minsk, won five victories in six matches.

Severstal came to the finish of the regular part of the Kontinental Hockey League championship with very good tournament performance: 84 points after 65 games, sole second place in the Western Conference table after Lokomotiv by one point ahead of Dinamo Minsk, excellent chances to start the first round of the playoffs with matches on the home court. March began with two tough matches against Lokomotiv Yaroslavl at home and away. Commenting on the course of these matches, the head coach of the Northerners, Andrey Kozyrev, summarized: In the first game we earned one point, and in the second we lost. On March 11, Severstal hosted a meeting with Tolyatti Lada. At the very beginning of the game, Tolyatti players opened the scoring, Ivan Savchik scored. However, having scored one goal in each period through the efforts of yesterday's junior Daniili Kazulaev, Slovak legionnaire Adam Lishka and defender Vladimir Grudinin, who hit an empty net three seconds before the end of the game, Cherepovets earned two points for a strong-willed victory (3:1). The score could have been bigger, but Lada goalkeeper Ivan Bocharov did a great job, deflecting 39 shots at his own goal.
