Not so long ago, it seemed that Nizhny Novgorod had practically secured a place in the top four of the West and could well compete for more. But in late January and early February, they were caught up in a game slump, when in eight matches the team scored only six points, winning only twice, and then against the outsiders of the East Admiral (3:2, OT) and Amur (2:1). After the hard–fought victories over the Dragons (4:3, OT) and Ak Bars (3:2, B), things seemed to be going well, but in the next four games, only one victory was won again - on the road over a direct competitor in the fight for a place in the top four, Severstal (2:1). This was followed by a defeat away from Sochi (1:5) and a fiasco on March 4 in a home match against Traktor Chelyabinsk (0:5). The hosts played number one, spent a lot of time attacking, made 38 shots on target for Denis Kostin, often played in the majority, including five against three, but they could not manage their chances, unlike Tractor, in which Joshua Livo made a double.

Currently, Avtozavodets have 76 points in 63 matches and are fifth in the Western Conference. There is already a five-point gap to the third Severstal, but a serious struggle is unfolding between Torpedo, CSKA, SKA and Dynamo Moscow for the coveted fourth place in the table.

It is already known for sure that for the team from the Krasnodar Territory, the current season will end on March 20, the day of the game of the last round of the regular season. It is unlikely to be possible to dislodge the Dragons from ninth place, but there is a task that is quite achievable - the tenth, penultimate place in the Western Conference table. This will happen if Sochi beat Tolyatti Lada in the remaining matches, which currently has one point more (45) than Sochi (44), but the Southerners have two games less. The Southerners have been plagued by problems in the organization of the game all season, which they have not been able to solve – both in attack (the lowest performance of all the league teams) and in defense (along with Lada, the lead in the number of goals conceded).

Only occasionally did the Black Sea residents gather their strength and show what they were capable of. For example, in the matches of late February and early March, they put up serious resistance to Dinamo Minsk (2:3) and Lokomotiv (2:3), confidently beat Torpedo (5:1), and on March 6 created a real sensation by defeating Omsk Avangard on home ice with a score of 3:1. Sochi goalkeeper Pavel Khomchenko blocked 48 shots, conceding only once in 30 seconds before the end of the match, while Artem Volkov, Matvey Guskov and Dmitry Kagarlitsky upset Omsk goalkeeper Andrei Mishurov once.

Denis Vengryzhanovsky, Cameron Lee and Noel Hefenmaier will not come with the team to Nizhny Novgorod.
