The Finns got off to a strong start at the World Cup and left no chance for the teams from Denmark (6:2) and Latvia (8:0) in the opening two matches. Lauri Mikkola's team stumbled in the game against the Czech Republic (1:2, OT), although they were considered clear favorites on paper, and then lost to the Canadians (4:7). At the 1/4 stage, Suomi sensationally passed the hosts of the tournament (4:3, OT), having won back twice during the confrontation. Heikki Ruohonen scored the first goal of the Finnish national team, and Leo Tuuva and Joona Saarelainen scored in the third period. The hero was Arttu Valila, who scored the winning goal for his team.
