RB Salzburg had a confident start to their Champions League campaign. Sevilla were considered the main favourite of this group, but already in the first round this status was challenged by RB Salzburg - Sevilla almost lost to the Bulls at home (1:1). In the second round, the Red-Whites barely managed a draw with Wolfsburg, having scored an equalizer in the last minute of the game (1:1). They also drew with Lille in France (0:0) before getting stung at home (1:2).

Julen Lopetegui's men prevailed over Wolfsburg (2:0) in the last round and retained a chance for a top-2 finish.
