Simona Halep managed to reach the final of WTA tournament for the first time in 2021. Support of local fans in Cluj-Napoca surely helped the Romanian player. After the second round match against Varvara Gracheva Halep said that she had problems with her back, but she still found a way into the final. 

In two most recent matches of the tournament Halep lost only three games to Christian and Kostyuk. Halep has finally reached the peak of her form for the first time in the season. Estonian player approached the title match of Cluj-Napoca tournament after winning a title of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow. Kontaveit is currently on a nine-match winning streak. The most difficult of the Romanian tournament was in the first round, against Krunic (6:3, 7:5). Then Kontaveit recorded easy victories over Van Uytvanck (6:3, 6:4), Kalinina (6:3, 6:1) and Peterson (6:3, 6:2).
