Elise Mertens rarely puts up a successful performance during the second half of the season. We can only remember the semi-final of San Jose tournament and the round of 16 at US Open. In most of other tournaments Belgian player failed to advance past the second round. 

Two weeks ago Mertens played at Luxembourg tournament. She barely avoided defeat in the match against Sasnovich (3:6, 6:2, 7:5). But in the next round she was defeated by Vondrousova (5:7, 2:6). 

Before the start of Chicago tournament Dayana Yastremska had a string of three consecutive defeats. In each of those matches Ukrainian player fought until the end, but in key moments she lacked confidence and it led to defeats. For example, in the first round of US Open Yastremska was beaten by Kerber, Ukrainian player lost a tiebreak in the decisive set (6:3, 4:6, 6:7).

In the first round of Chicago tournament Yastremska had a difficult opponent, Alize Cornet. Everything was decided in the first set, both players were fighting for an advantage. Yastremska was unstoppable in the second set (7:5, 6:1).
