Angelique Kerber reached the round of 16 for second consecutive season. German player has a great chance to advance further in the main draw, because her next opponent will be not Osaka, but Leylah Fernandez, who lacks experience.

We should note that Kerber beat three dangerous opponents in first three rounds. In the first round German player was close to an elimination, but managed to beat Yastremska on a tiebreak in the decisive set (3:6, 6:4, 7:6). 18-year old Leylah Fernandez clinched a spot in Top-100 and sometimes puts up great results. But Canadian player still lacks consistency. For example, she won a tournament at Monterrey in March, but then she failed to win more than three matches in a single tournament, before the start of US Open. 

In first two matches at New York Fernandez beat fellow inconsistent players, Ana Konjuh (7:6, 6:2) and Kaia Kanepi (7:5, 7:5). In the third round she played against the current champion of the tournament, Naomi Osaka. Japanese player had a great chance to record a victory in straight sets, but failed to do that and then she simply couldn't get back on track (5:7, 7:6, 6:4).
