Ajla Tomljanovic just can't remain consistent. Though, sometimes Australian player is able to put up a successful performance on the major tournament. For example, she reached the quarter-final at Wimbledon, which is a huge success for the World No. 50.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo Ajla was beaten in the second round by Elina Svitolina in a contested match (6:4, 3:6, 4:6). Here, at San Jose, Ajla managed to mount a comeback in the match against Amanda Anisimova (1:6, 7:5, 7:5). Amanda had two match-points in that match, but Ajla still got the victory. 

Yulia Putintseva put up a successful performance at Budapest tournament in July. Kazakhstani player won the title of that competition. But she failed to improve that success at the Olympics. Yulia withdrew herself during the second set of the first round match against Podoroska due to health issues.

In the first round of San Jose tournament Putintseva had a tough challenge - match against Donna Vekic. Not everything was going by Yulia's plan, but she eventually took the victory in straight sets (7:5, 6:3).
