Because of her health problems Ashleigh Barty failed to finish the clay part of the season on a good note. On the most recent tournaments at Rome and at Paris Australian player had to retire due to injuries. Now Ashleigh has recovered and easily made it to the final of London tournament.
Throughout the main draw Barty gave away only one set, it happened in the match against Suarez Navarro (6:1, 6:7, 6:1). After that the World No.1 player won five matches without losing a set. Her opponents were Blinkova, Siniakova, Krejcikova, Tomljanovic and Kerber.
In the semi-final Barty had a very difficult match against the winner of 2018 Wimbledon, Angelique Kerber (6:3, 7:6). German player is in a great form and managed to put up a fight against Ashleigh. But Barty was simply faultless: she lost only one game at her serve, won 88% on her 1st serve and had a great record of winners-unforced errors (38-16). It will be very hard to beat Ashleigh now for any player on tour.
On predictions before the start of Wimbledon no one considered Karolina Pliskova a serious title contender. The reason is her unsuccessful performance on the previous tournaments, at Berlin and at Eastbourne, where she failed to get past the first round.
But Karolina's performance has improved at London. She had a relatively easy draw before the semi-final: Zidansek, Vekic, Martincova, Samsonova and Golubic. All of them were beaten by Pliskova in straight sets.
But the semi-final match against the second player in the world, Aryna Sabalenka, was incredibly difficult for Karolina. Hardly anyone expected Pliskova to beat the Belarusian player. But Czech player put up a wonderful performance and secured a victory in three sets (5:7, 6:4, 6:4). An accurate game on her serve was the key factor of a successful performance. Aryna had only one break-point in the first set. In the second and third set Karolina's opponent couldn't get even close to a possible break.
