For the first time in the season Jelena Ostapenko reached the semi-final of WTA tournament. In the previous week at Birmingham Latvian player got herself adapted to the grass, but won only one match. She improved significantly in Eastbourne.

In Eastbourne Kazakhstan representative is also not looking confident. In the first round she lost a set to a low-ranked player, Dart (6:2, 6:7, 6:4). In the second round she was close to losing a set to Svitolina (6:4, 7:6). In the quarter-final Elena was playing against Sevastova and secured a win only after the tiebreak in the third set (2:6, 7:6, 7:6).
